I AM Research Institute / I AM Research Group
Research & Partnerships
Consequential questions.
Research built
to answer them.
Commission a study. Develop a grant. Strengthen your research team. We bring rigorous methods and clearly defined deliverables to questions that matter to your institution and the people it serves.
What you can commission
A research partner.
From concept to consequence.
Bring us a question, a proposal, a program, or a team. We’ll shape an engagement around the work you need to accomplish.

01 / Study design & execution
Build the study.
Do the work.
Explain the findings.
Engage I AM for research design, protocol development, measurement, data collection planning, qualitative or quantitative analysis, and preparation of findings. We can lead a defined workstream or collaborate with your existing team.

02 / Grant development
Give the proposal a stronger foundation.
Shape the research concept, sharpen specific aims, build the research strategy, and develop evaluation plans and proposal narratives in collaboration with your team.

03 / Team training
Build capacity that stays with your team.
Applied training in study design, measurement, qualitative and quantitative methods, data interpretation, research writing, and public communication—tailored to your team’s experience and work.

04 / Analysis & evaluation
Understand what is happening—and why.
Commission an evidence review, program evaluation, analytic workstream, or findings report. We connect the analysis to your decision and explain the limits alongside the results.
One defined assignment or a sustained research collaboration.
The proposal specifies scope, responsibilities, deliverables, timeline, and fees.
Our research agenda
Health is shaped
across systems.
Our research focus connects people, institutions, environments, care systems, and the data used to understand them.
Population Health
& Outcomes
The conditions, environments, institutions, and systems that shape health outcomes across populations.
Mental Health
& Chronic Disease
Questions at the intersection of stress, disease, care, behavior, resilience, and long-term outcomes.
Health Data
& Population Intelligence
Surveys, public data resources, and analytic products that make health patterns visible and interpretable.
Access, Trust & Systems of Care
Access, communication, trust, caregiving, and the institutions people navigate when they seek care.
Measurement Science & Research Methods
Ways to ask, measure, analyze, and interpret complex questions while preserving context and explaining uncertainty.
How an engagement works
Clarity before
the first dataset.
A productive research partnership begins with a shared understanding of the question, the resources, and the intended use of the evidence.
Discuss your scope ↗Start with the question
Discuss the problem, your setting, existing work, and the decision or outcome the project needs to inform.
Define the engagement
Agree on scope, team roles, milestones, deliverables, timeline, and fees in a written proposal.
Build the research plan
Specify the design, measures, sources, analytic approach, and applicable data-access and ethics requirements.
Execute with visibility
Carry out the agreed work with scheduled updates, documented decisions, and review of emerging questions.
Deliver and transfer
Present the findings, explain limitations, and hand over agreed materials so your team can use the work.
The I AM methods commitment
The rigor is
in the decisions.
The question determines the design. The evidence determines the claim. We make the reasoning visible so partners can understand how findings were produced and what they support.

Design that fits the question.
Define the population, setting, concepts, and claims the study can reasonably support.
Measures with a rationale.
Examine validity, category definitions, bias, and the context behind what is being measured.
Sources you can trace.
Document where evidence comes from, how it was prepared, and which definitions shape interpretation.
Limits made explicit.
Explain missingness, uncertainty, study constraints, and the boundaries of inference.
Findings independent of preference.
Report what the evidence supports. Research funding does not determine the conclusion.
What the work can produce
Deliverables with
a purpose.
Every engagement defines its outputs at the outset. These are examples of what a scoped project may include.
A coherent research package
Evidence your team
can interrogate and use.
A study may combine a protocol, measurement framework, documented analysis, findings report, and presentation. A training engagement may produce an applied curriculum and practice materials. The deliverable follows the assignment.
Tell us what you need ↗Research plans
Protocols, instruments, evaluation frameworks, and analytic plans.
Funding narratives
Specific aims, research strategies, and evaluation sections.
Evidence products
Reports, briefs, manuscripts, and accessible presentations.
Team resources
Custom training, methods guidance, and applied exercises.
Public research platforms
Evidence beyond
a single engagement.
Explore the public initiatives connecting participation, population health, and the visibility of research data.
Co-OP
Community participation
Connect people to the work.
A community-facing initiative connecting participation, survey work, and public health evidence.
Explore the Co-OP ↗Health Atlas
Population visibility
Make the patterns visible.
A public data initiative focused on population health, demographic context, and the quality and limits of available data.
Explore the Atlas ↗Black Data
Survey & research priorities
Ask what the data misses.
A survey initiative designed to surface experiences, needs, and priorities that can inform reports and future inquiry.
Explore State of Black Data ↗Visit each initiative for its current scope and participation information.

Public learning / In development
The People’s Lab
Our proposed eight-hour Public Evidence Studio brings people into research design, measurement, interpretation, and communication. Ask about hosting an immersion or commissioning tailored team training.
Discuss learning with I AM ↗Start a research engagement
Bring the question.
Let’s build
the work.
Tell us what you want to understand, who the work needs to serve, and where your team is starting. We’ll discuss whether I AM is a fit and what a useful scope could look like.
A useful first conversation starts with:
Research services are scoped separately from the institute’s fellowship, publishing, and public immersion programs in development toward 2028.
